I beg to refer to your letter, dated Downing Street the

4th instant (a copy of which was sent to me by my colleague Mr. E. J. :)

Carroll, London), by which you acquaint my Company Sanders, Rehder

and Co. Limited, London E.C. that the Governor of Hongkong has

reported to Mr. Secretary Bonar Law the resignation of its agent in

Hongkong, Er. Humphrey Cheetham; and that His Excellency, the Gover

nor, is prepared to recognize Messrs. Reise and Co. if my Company

appoint them to be our agents both at Hongkong and Canton to sell

the petroleum products of the Texas Company.

My colleague transmitted this information to me in a cable

which I passed on to the Texas Company while recommending to it

Meesre. Reiss' appointment, and the Texas Company is willing to fall

in with my recommendation, provided:

a) that Messrs. Reise & Co. execute, jointly with my London

Company, the Texas Company's regular form of contract.
